This paranormal romantic suspense takes us offworld to Harmony, a world colonized by a high-tech futuristic Earth but then cut off from the home planet and reverting back to today's level of technology in a setting that is parallel to our Pacific Northwest. On this new planet, latent psi abilities are common, enhanced by tuned amber. The heroine of this book, Lyra Dore, makes her living, such as it is, by tuning amber, though she also explores the alien ruins and sells relics from them (and has another source of income with great potential, besides).

The main plot is a little slow to get started but hums along pretty smoothly, involving a murder in the Amber Inc. laboratory and the theft of an alien artifact that may or may not be dangerous in the wrong hands. Toward the end, though, the resolution of this plot line becomes predictable. The secondary plot concerning Lyra's secret admirer actually has more suspense initially than does the industrial espionage of the main plot. Unfortunately, it too loses steam at the end, going with the obvious resolution instead of adding an unexpected twist.

The romance subplot is what carries the book in the first half. Cruz Sweetwater walks back into Lyra's life after an aborted courtship a few months earlier, which enabled him to get close to her so his family's company could gain control of the valuable ruin she had discovered. Now, as she sees it, she's useful to him again. Though she is just as willing to use him (to vault her career to a higher level of exclusivity) as he is to use her (for her unique paranormal talent), she's portrayed as being the one with superior ethics. Part of this undoubtedly derives from the feud between their two families, with hers being working class and his having gained power supposedly by cheating hers a few generations back.

Several plot elements are rehashed from previous Jayne Castle/Jayne Ann Krentz books outside of the Curtain World/Ghost Hunters series. For example, Jeff, the young Sweetwater employee who wants to break from the family business, reminds me of Josh Trevelyan from Absolutely, Positively (1996). The connection with art galleries and relics is reminiscent of Sharp Edges (1998) and Eye of the Beholder (1999), the latter of which also has a metaphysical guru like the one in Obsidian Prey (Ghost Hunters, Book 6). The theft of a crystal and murder of a lab tech occur in Soft Focus (1999), along with the hero's demand to have a second chance with the heroine. Then there's the family feud from the Jayne Ann Krentz Collection - Eclipse Bay: Eclipse Bay, Dawn in Eclipse Bay, Summer in Eclipse Bay series.

The heroine is JAK's standard feisty, principled, independent woman with a chip on her shoulder, running around doing dangerous stuff but sure that nothing bad could possibly befall her--and she doesn't need any help, thank you. The hero is likewise stock: controlling and dangerous, but also loyal and protective toward his family and perceptive, sensitive, and generous with the heroine no matter how bitchy she is. Lyra resents the power held by Amber Inc., and she certainly doesn't approve of how the Sweetwater family got to the top, but she isn't too proud to cut corners and act unethically for her own advantage. These characters are a melange of likeable and unlikeable characteristics, and the mix doesn't make me want to get to know them quickly. They have just enough depth to support the story line.

Then when they do sleep together, she says sex is just sex and doesn't mean anything (though it was good for her, the first orgasm that didn't require a "small personal appliance"). Although she claims he broke her heart during that first "fake" courtship, the only sign of her anguish is that she filed a lawsuit against Amber Inc. Where are the emotions?

Although the writing style is somewhat passive, the plot is predictable, and the characters are stock, Jayne Castle's storytelling still carries the day. This was an enjoyable enough read, more like the first few books in the Ghost Hunters series.

OBSIDIAN PREY is the sixth Harmony book. Harmony is an earth colony that was cut off from earth and where the people have developed paranormal talents related to items found on the planet. As with DARK LIGHT this book also brings in the world of Arcane where people on earth also had paranormal talents.

OBSIDIAN PREY is the story of Cruz Sweetwater. The Sweetwater family was introduced in RUNNING HOT (a contemporary under the name of Jayne Ann Krentz). The Sweetwater familly is a family of assassins who operate to eliminate those with paranormal talents who cannot be dealt with in any other matter. As a result of their familly business, the Sweetwaters have a great sense of family. Cruz found the woman who was meant for him three months ago. Lyra Dore is the woman for Cruz. However, three months ago, he lied to her about who he was in order to discover the rare amethyst ruin that she discovered but that actually belongs to the Sweetwater company. After Lyra found out about Cruz's lies, the two parted...but now Cruz is back for the woman who was meant to be his soulmate.

I absolutely loved Cruz Sweetwater. The Sweetwater men are so vulnerable to love and I so much enjoyed seeing the family continuing on Harmony. My complaint about this book is not about the relationship but about the storyline. For me, there was too much shoved in here and I never really felt that the suspense of the story was allowed to develop. I felt that the solutions were revealed to the mysteries before I really asked the questions. There was too much happening here.

While this book is part of the Harmony series, it is not necessary to have read the other books in the series before reading this one. I would recommend reading the historical Quicksilver (Amanda Quick) which is also about the Sweetwater familly.
This is book six in the series about ghost hunters and the planet Harmony. Amber is the most essential ingredient if you want to stay safe, but it needs to be tuned. Enter amber tuner Lyra Dore, who found the amethyst ruins, a very important find. Apparently only she can tune amethyst, which most tuners can't.

What would be a Harmony book without a dust bunny? Lyra's paints and paints very well. Because she is the close friend of an art gallery owner, she quickly finds an outlet for the paintings done by her dust bunny.

The 'love-of-her-life', Amber Inc. CEO Cruz Sweetwater, took over her find and now she won't see him or talk to him. Of course, that doesn't stop him because he knows that she is his true love.

Three months later, he wants her to open a psychic door that has trapped 5 men in the ruins. He knows she won't let people die, regardless of how mad and hurt she is. It is a romantic suspense so you know there's a better than good chance that they will rescue the people and then they start dating again.

Lyra begins to feel unstable at times, but, of course, refuses to seek help.

When she evaluates an amethyst piece for a buyer at an auction, only to give him the bad news that it is nice, but not very powerful, she is asked to evaluate yet another piece for him. This time, the piece is locked up. Before she can evaluate the piece, Cruz interrupts, but she senses that this is a piece from her find -- the one she believes Cruz has stolen.

Cruz wears obsidian amber, another rare amber. which he burns and 'shatters' protecting her from an attack before he collapses. When help arrives, she refuses to let go of his hand, and stays with him to help him heal despite his instructions to the contrary.

But of course thee dealer gets murdered. Sneaky villains are a Castle specialty. Next the head of Amber,Inc's lab is found dead, with the artifact. Cruz is not fooled. He sees through the plot and is off to thwart the villain.

Dust bunnies and true love prevail. If you like a romantic suspenseful journey, this book is for you. Read it at the beach or on an airplane. Enjoy the convoluted story that you know will end well.
