Since the main character is taking Prozac, I think there is a lot more to her own story about what really happened in her marriage and why her husband has custody of their 10 year old son and they live in another state than what we hear in this first book in the antiques series. More important in Antiques Roadkill is getting family antiques back from an unscrupulous dealer and solving a murder mystery before either Brandy or her mom get killed. One person's death is very distressing--not gory but that of an innocent bystander. Since this is a cozy, there are lighter moments and it is easy, breezy reading, especially because of the storyteller style.

Antiques Roadkill A Trash 'n' Treasures Mystery Trash 'n' Treasures Mysteries Barbara Allan 9780758211910 Books Reviews

Despite some flaws with the heroine I really did love this mystery and found her to be funny despite her flaws and quirks. But while reading a book I like all kinds of characters. Part of what made the book was so cute were the hints about antiquing that were spread throughout the story. I thought it added a nice little touch to the book. I don't read too many mystery books in comparison to other genres, but this was definitely the kind I like. I would reccomend this book to anybody who likes to read dozy mystery stories.
The story was likeable enough, although I don't think the main character is someone I'd care to spend much time with. She seems very irresponsible and selfish, sarcastic in a self-pitying in a pretty nasty way.

But the formatting for kindle stinks. Hyphens from the original are left in place where they are not needed.

The spacing
is weird
lydone

And then there are the times when one word in the text jumps up half a line, or the top stroke of a letter is sheared off.

"Or whendialog
looks"
.this

So you are pretty sure you don't even have all the text.

Free for kindle yeah, good thing too.
This is actually the first book in the series which gave me more information about the town and the characters. This is a fun cozy mystery that I really enjoyed and recommend for a quick easy read!
I got this book as a free download and was kind of worried because of all the customer reviews that were less than complimentary - but it was free so what did I have to lose but a bit of time?

I loved it - as a matter of fact I was thrilled to find that it's the first book of a series and there are already three more books.

I will admit that I did find it a bit annoying when Ms. Allan (okay, I know it's not Ms. Allan - Barbara is the Ms. and Allan is the Mr. of the writing team) felt the need to tell us the label name of every piece of clothing and make up mentioned. I really don't see how it advances the story that she uses L'Oreal black mascara instead of her just putting some mascara on. But I don't see that it detracts from the story either.

The story didn't drag, there was plenty of action, enough characters to keep it interesting but not so many that you can't keep them straight and the action seemed plausible.

Give it a look - you might just find a new series you can revisit time and time again.
A long, detailed review would probably do "Antiques Roadkill" a disservice, as the book clearly isn't meant to be scrutinized and analyzed, rather pleasantly enjoyed and passed to a friend... or, in my case, sent to the second on my account, so my wife could read it. In any event, printed book or -ized version, Barbara Allan's first installment in her "Trash & Treasures" mystery series has all the elements any self-respecting "cozy" series needs. A cute heroine? Check. Quirky, eccentric, but ultimately likable supporting characters surrounding the heroine? Check. A picturesque small town setting? Check. A fascinating hobby or interest that's promoted by the characters and ties the whole book together? Check (in this case, it's antiques). Exasperated law enforcement officials who slowly lose patience for the heroine's amateur sleuthing efforts? Check. And finally, a credible mystery plot laced with enough danger to create adequate tension but not enough to torpedo the overall light, bouncy, tone of the story? Check.

In other words, Ms. Allan's "Antiques Roadkill" delivers everything fans of light, "cozy" mysteries expect, but does so in a fresh, invigorating way.

Okay, enough cute hedging about the book's authorship. Barbara Allan is, of course, the pen name for the husband-and-wife writing team of Max Allan Collins and Barbara Collins. I'm a big fan of Mr. Collins' solo mystery works, so I thought I'd try this collaboration out. It's not as tough or sexy as the stories Mr. Collins produces on his own, but then it's not supposed to be. What you get is banter, family craziness, a couple of tight spots, and yes, a cute pet (another "cozy" must). Nothing spectacular, but all fun. Though I don't know for sure, I suspect Mr. Collins' main contributions were the plot, fast pacing, and occasional dangerous situations, with Barbara Collins contributing the quirkiness, girlish banter, and neurotic internal monologues (as those elements don't often turn up in Mr. Collins' solo books).

If you're like me and dive into the occasional (or maybe more than occasional) lighter mystery as a change of pace from all the blood-and-guts mysteries and thrillers out there, you'll certainly enjoy "Antiques Roadkill". I'm going to move on to the next book in the series before too long, and after reading "Antiques Roadkill", you'll probably want to, as well.
I only read e-books so I am use to seeing what I think are formatting issues, but this book had that and some messed up grammar!
I even thought of writing the author and letting her know. I bet she is not even aware. I can't blame her. Who would read their own book on a different format just to make sure the PUBLISHER did their job. All of this got in the way of the story.
On to the story.... the Mom was funny and quirky but the daughter told the story and she was never a sympathetic character! I didn't like her and that made it hard to like the book. She was not the antagonist so I should like her. I thought it was just a bit of a jumble of characters who I would have rather heard more of rather than the daughter who was not fun. I wanted fun but got only a glimpse of it.
I finished it with ease and won't read another "Road kill" again. Do I want my time back from reading this book, NO, but not the most enjoyable book ever.
