A Beautiful Lie Playing with Fire Series TE Sivec Tara Sivec 9781481258883 Books Reviews
This book didn't end up being what I thought it was. I don't think the Blurb gave an accurate synopsis or introduction to this plot. It's not a New Adult book and its more of a romantic suspense than contemporary romance.
A Beautiful Lie was a love triangle between Garrett McCarthy, Annabelle Parker and Milo Robert, even though one of three best friends (Milo) was missing. The search for Milo began to reveal the secrets that the best friends kept from each other.
I wasn't as intrigued with the resolution of the love triangle as I was with the mystery of Milo. Milo was the only member of the triumvirate who didn't have a voice as the navy Seal Garrett and CIA operative Milo was investigating his disappearance. There was a little angst in the book, but mostly, it held sexual tension.
I did not connect with any of the characters and I didn't feel as engaged with their love story. I find it interesting that such highly trained people can miss the most obvious things and really aren't as good with reading people as they think they are.
I didn't enjoy the characters but overall it was just okay.
*Special thanks to Tantor Audio for the audiobook, which was given in exchange for an honest review
Ok, after the first chapter we know this couple is hot for each other. But to refer to this over and over and over again interrupted the flow of the book. I finally stopped reading the book (a rare event for me) because I could no longer put up with this theme.
So I will never know how it ends, but at least, I am no longer dealing with his and her hot thoughts. By the time they finally get together, the passion (for me) will have been spent.
Well this was a hard one to rate but when it was all said and done I had to go with the 3 star. I did love the story in this book and it was hard to put down so that definitely earned it 3 stars.
My issues with it where that I just could not emotionally connect with the characters. I liked them but the way the book was written stopped that emotional connection I need to give a book more than 3 stars. The shocking part is I love Tara Sivec, her chocolate lovers series was totally 5 stars!! Unfortunately not being able to make that connection in this book had my rating falling short. This book is written in third person POV which is not my favourite, but I can easily get into that as long as it's limited, we know who's head we are in and the transitions are smooth. This was not limited it felt more like third person omniscient POV, which means you know what everyone's thinking and it's very jumpy all the time. Sometimes it was ok cause you would be in one characters head for a bit but then with no real transition or notification you were in someone else's. I found this prevented me from really connecting with the characters and at times it was hard to follow the story (which was sad because it was a good story).
That being said I did really enjoy the story and after about 40% the book became easier to follow. More positives are that there was lots of great action, a kick butt heroine, suspense and the steam was off the charts! I will be continuing with the series cause the story in book 2 intrigues me I just hope I can get use to the POV...
The story line for this book, although unbelievable, was not terrible. It kept my attention, for the most part. It was clear that these organizations would not actually function the way they are represented here, but I am willing to look past that for a well written book. This was not really well written. I couldn't help but think throughout that a good editor would have streamlined a lot of the pointless rambling that took place in each characters head. Also, this was written in third person, which in itself is not bad, but we were constantly in someone else's head and it was almost too much. All in all, I liked the characters, even though they weren't too bright considering what they did for a living. I got this book for free and for a free book it wasn't bad. I probably wouldn't pay for it though.
*This is an ADULT Book. That means there is sex and language that may offend. Don't read this book if you don't like sex and offensive language in your reading material. Know what you read before you read it!*
What if?
If you could go back and tell the truth instead of a lie, would you?
These are the two questions that are the basis for A Beautiful Lie. This book has it all desire, romance, sex, tension, intrigue, lies, suspense, violence, humor, emotional pain, longing, secrets, big reveals, and a satisfying ending. The author has done a great job of writing in ebbs and flows. There are waves of flashbacks intertwined with current time storyline. I found myself hooked by the end of Chapter 1.
There were a few things that were predictable, but I didn't mind because the explanation of events and how things came to be was a good payoff. The main characters were very well-developed, and I was drawn to both of them. The actual storyline is not exactly believable (NAVY SEALS, CIA Agents, the President of the Dominican Republic) but I was easily able to suspend reality to enjoy the book. The author really understands this genre and how to write for it.
The one thing that really bothered me was the single word choice for the male anatomy - it could have been more gracefully spoken about similarly to the way the author described female anatomy. It kind of took me out the moment and the story because it was rather crass. I did like the writing of the sex scenes.
I see that this book is the first in a series. I was curious to see where book #2 was going to go and was pleased to see that the books that follow are about other characters from this book and not the main characters. Their storyline ended with this book. I'll keep that in mind because I do like this author's craft.
I read this very quickly over a weekend. Perfect for a weekend getaway or when you want to feel warm and fuzzy or need a light and quick read.
This book read like porn. I found myself skipping multiple pages of smut to get to the plot of the story.
