I heard about this book just within the last month. It received Pulitzer Price in 1928. It was also banned in a couple of states. I always like to read books that have been banned, to see if I can figure out why it was banned.A quote from the book. "Christians often turned right into wrong, justice into injustice. Denied some of the plainest, simplest facts of life. Thought they could run God's business. Sometimes they were right not always. No body is always right. No body always knows what right is. The wisest people in the world are ignorant at times. The most free-handed have to be stingy sometimes and the kindest mean.".

Very pleased with this purchase and storyline.
THe book was a bold and successful experiment. While it's an interesting read in that context, it will not be a favorite.
Sister Mary wants to be a good girl, but when you are young and in love with the most handsome no count man around, well sometimes you fail. She does get married in time to hush those gossiping women, but having a hard life can harden a woman, and you can't expect her to be alone all the time when her husband runs off.
At the time this book was written it was slammed by many other black authors for being written in black southern dialect. At first that made it hard to read, but it soon fell into a rhythm that felt good to read. I could hear the voices.
I have been reading the Pulitzer's and not liking most of them. This is one of the better ones, and I loved Sister Mary. She took what she could from a bad life to try to make a good one without complaining, and she lived her life the way she chose in spite of what people said, which was quite a feat in that time period.
This is a book you read, put away, think about off and on for a few years, and then pick it up and read it again and have all new thoughts about it.
Enjoyed this.
The edition that I read (1998) has a lengthy foreword by A. J. Verdelle that makes considerably more of the book than exists. This is the story of a promiscuous black woman that lived somewhere around 1900. Scarlet Mary had nine children by nine different men but she was a very good mother that loved and cared for her children. Peterkin’s free flowing writing style makes this little book a quick read; perhaps it’s only quality. I didn’t care for the book as any historical value that the book may have had did not ring true when compared with other works that might be considered of the same genre. I don’t feel that the book taught me anything.
Two stars. Not recommended.
Used in our Book Club at a retirement community. Great Discussion.
shThe writing of Julia peterkin is excellent. These books wiil actually feel somewhat sociological studies. many current things can be seen in the begginnings of them Very good, but too unknown.ould be more known
